A Good Choice - Unisex Baby Clothing

By

Although becoming less and less common, you may not know the sex of the baby you are carrying. And if you do know, you still have the same problem. What do you do about clothing for your new baby? How about unisex baby clothes?

There are a few things you can do

  • Set up a gift registry at the store of your choice or even two different stores if you can't get all the styles you like at one store.
  • Drop hints to your family and friends about what you would like and what style you would like them in.
  • Suggest to a close friend that you would like to have a baby shower for such and such group of friends and acquaintances.
  • Speak to another friend or family member about a shower with a different group of friends.
  • Finally, buy the clothes yourself - your last choice.

If by chance you do not know the sex of your baby - and that is becoming less and less common with the abundance of ultra sound availability these days, what do you do? In the gift registry, put in an abundance of unisex baby clothes for people to choose.

Unisex baby clothes are simply clothes that can be worn by a new born regardless of their sex. Boys or girls would look quite at home in them.

Basic colors would be neutral. Patterns, if any, will be stripes and lines. Perhaps gender neutral animals or cartoon figures would be fine.

When receiving your gifts, no matter how many articles of the same type you get, they probably will not be enough. One, two, three or more spit ups (or worse) and there you have another change of clothes.

Some suggestions

  • At least six body suits with wide head openings and loose fitting around the wrists and ankles. Make sure that they have finished seams so that there is nothing rough against the child's body. This last suggestion is good for any type of clothing for the baby.
  • Six one piece pajamas or 'wearable blankets. At first you will want the kind wear you can just slip the baby in. As they get just a bit older, find the ones that snap together along the legs and bottom. You will be glad have this many because otherwise you will be doing multiple clothes washings every day and you won't have time for that.
  • About six or seven soft undershirts with snaps at the neck for easier fitting when pulling the shirt on. These undershirts are very good for layering - babies need layering perhaps more than adults do. They are also good for protect the baby's soft skin from rougher outer garments. Get the ones that snap around the crotch so they don't ride up.
  • Two or three soft sweaters for cool days, especially in the fall and spring seasons.
  • For the winter, a sleeping bag type outer wear is useful
  • A minimum of 15 receiving blankets. These are soft clothes that are useful for so many different areas of baby care.
  • A couple of soft wool caps to keep the head warm even indoors at times.
  • And of course a good number of socks because as you will find out, poop gets everywhere.

When getting clothes for the baby, you will find that many of them seem to be too big. That's OK! Your newborn will not be a newborn for long and will outgrow his or her clothes soon enough. It is just too bad that you can't have a baby shower at 3 months and then again at six months etc etc.

When purchasing unisex baby clothes or gender specific clothing, you have you choice of clothing in almost any city in the U.S. Stores such a BabiesRus, Baby Gap, The Children's Place and more. They each carry a wide variety of clothing at all baby age levels. You will find though that the selection weighs heavily to the girls choices.

When looking online, you have even more options. When buying for babies online, you will find that even if you misjudge the size and order too big, it will fit the baby soon enough. Do a quick search in Google and you will find more outlets than you could look at in a reasonable amount of time.

When buying for the baby, don't worry about the brand name. What counts is that your baby is warm and cozy in this strange new world they are in. Remember you were once that age too.
